Mickalene Thomas

“New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas is known for her elaborate paintings adorned with rhinestones, enamel and colorful acrylics. Her depictions of African American women explore notions of black female celebrity and identity while romanticizing ideas of femininity and power. Reminiscent of 70s style Blaxploitation, the subjects in Thomas' paintings radiate sexuality. Women in provocative poses sprawl across the picture plane and are surrounded by kitschy decorative patterns inspired by her childhood.” Ok, so I took that perfectly written paragraph about Thomas from the gallery that represents her (see bellow). Thomas has recently been in magazines/newspapers such as Nylon, United Hemispheres, and The New York Times and graduated from the Pratt Institute and Yale University. Thomas’s work is so creative, unique, and more importantly, it comes with a deep intellectual meaning. I just love how she explores African American women, women in general, and sexuality in different mediums- her paintings with rhinestones and photographs. I would love to have her artwork!
